Krypto: Attacke auf AES
-.-. --.- -.-. --.- -.-. --.- -.-. --.- -.-. --.- -.-. --.-

On krypto@thur.de, a german mailing list dedicated to discussions regarding
social consequences of cryptology, Thomas Roessler recently points toward
this .lu - newspaper article in german language:

| Basic research [made] in Luxembourg | | Pascal Zeihen, professor for
mathematics and computer science at the "Lycée | classique" in Diekirch,
developed a new procedure for the decoding of data, | which could have
extensive following within the areas of data security and | artificial intelligence

krypto@ list maintainer Lutz Donnerhacke with a keen interest to learn more
about Prof. Zeihen's claim contacted him by e-mail and here are some
snippets of his first reply:
"The articles in the Luxembourgian newspapers are based on an internal
document submitted to the CRP-GL, that describes my recent works in
cryptology and my current research area. As long as no official publication
has been finished and approved by our Government, I cannot send you
details about the algorithms."
"But I confirm that new methods based on Artificial Intelligence allow fast
attacks on block-cipher algorithms."
"I tested the procedure with DES, and I hope to get the necessary computer
equipment soon, in order to apply it to AES and to develop efficient protection
software against the new attacks."
here is more recent "final" follow-up:

Message to all people interested in DES
----- Forwarded message from Pascal ZEIHEN <pascal.zeihen@ci.educ.lu> ---
-- Good morning,
I have been abroad for a week and now I find hundreds of messages about
DES in my mailbox. Here is some useful information:
* My approach to break block-cipher algorithms is based on AI and
heuristical methods. Its first implementation works only if the plaintext
verifies certain special conditions (about length, entropy, data layout).
Unfortunately, such essential details are not described in newspaper articles.
* A first test series took place on December 13, 2001, in the grammar high
school in Diekirch, where the required computer equipment was available.
The tests were successful, and the applied procedure was approved by
mathematicians, computer scientists and a notary. As suggested by some
people, future test series will also include foreign experts to be chosen and
invited to Luxembourg by the Foundation described below.
* For privacy reasons, all my research work related to the DES project will be
transferred to a Foundation. After it has started its work, you will find
information about it on the web.
* I am a mathematician, not a hacker; I do not "crack" data for people I do
not personally know. Please do not send any more copy-protected games
(software protection has nothing to do with DES!!), test data, questions or
suggestions to my private address. Thank you.
Kind regards,
Pascal ZEIHEN <pascal.zeihen@ci.educ.lu>
