Web/wachstum: Fantastillionen angesagt

FRAMINGHAM, MASSACHUSETTS, U.S.A., 1998 JUN 25 (NB) -- By Bob Woods, Newsbytes. Internet-related
spending from both businesses and consumers will total $124 billion this year, and will surpass the
half-trillion dollar mark in 2002, a new report from International Data Group's (IDG) International
Data Corp. (IDC) claims. The amount of money spent for total Internet commerce, or the purchase of
goods and services over the Net, will close in on $250 billion in the US in 2002, IDC also said.

The new IDC White Paper also said that in just four years, the number of people accessing the World
Wide Web on a "regular" basis has shot up to 100 million people.

The White Paper found that by 2002, US businesses will spend over $200 billion on Internet
technology deployment, which will total 20 percent of all spending on technology. By the end of
1998, that spending will reach over $62 billion. What's more, non-technology spending in areas like
content creation and professional services will grow to $300 billion in 2002, IDC said.

What's more, the amount of venture capital Internet companies can tap for money in 1998 will nearly
double to more than $8 billion, IDC also said.

Venture capital firms will be happy to hear that Web applications' return on investment (ROI) was
245 percent in the first year, compared to leading-edge client/server applications at 95 percent.

IDC also surveyed a group of "Internet architects," whose roles include setting standards,
redesigning business processes, financing expansion, and evangelizing the Internet, in the spring of
1998. John Gantz, IDC senior vice president, said that IDC's research shows "that these `architects'
are an aggressive, risk taking, optimistic bunch. They have a common need to think strategically
about the opportunity the Internet offers them, develop tactics for chasing that opportunity, and
demand the attention of others who will help them in their pursuit."

IDC set out to find out the effect of such "architects" on the Internet. The company's survey
results showed that 75 percent of the architects have either direct control or significant influence
over their company's Internet strategy, and more than 80 percent purchase products and services over
the Internet at least once a month.

Internet security and market research analysts polled by IDC, meantime, estimated that more than
5,000 of their clients each read their reports over the course of a year. Those analysts' opinions
are amplified by the trade, business, and general press that read them.

Also, venture capitalists surveyed said they will invest an average of $20 million each in Internet
companies in 1998.

Results from IDC's White Paper and survey were taken from people who appeared in sources like
Internet newsletters, IDG publications and other business sources. Those people were recruited by
e-mail and asked to take a survey at a particular Web site. Respondents were screened to make sure
they fit the "architect" definition before their responses were used. IDC said it received 630
qualified responses.

While IDC said it believes the results are statistically valid, the company said that the results
may be more representative of the opinions of the top half of the community of Internet architects
than of the entire group, estimated at 78,000.
