The People Versus Larry Matthews The prosecution of Larry Matthews is not just a case of press freedom but freedom of speech for all, argues Jason Burton. New controversy now surrounds the case of Larry Matthews, a US journalist caught last summer in an FBI 'sting' while researching an expose on child pornography rings on the Internet. Matthews was indicted last summer on nine counts of possession of child pornography and six counts of distribution of child pornography. He claims that at the time the alleged crimes were committed, he was attempting to infiltrate child-porn chat sites by posing as a paedophile for the purposes of research. In a bizarre twist of events Matthews himself was arrested as a result of the FBI's Innocent Images program in Baltimore, Maryland, where agents had adopted a similar strategy of frequenting anonymous chat rooms to catch adults who solicit minors and exchange child porn. Free speech campaigners and journalists in the US have rightfully argued that if such a request were granted it would have disastrous consequences for anyone engaged in research where the subject matter strays into illegality. However, in the process of defending Matthews' rights as a journalist, those who set out to defend free speech are in danger of seriously compromising the rights of the rest of us to make decisions about what we listen to, read or watch.
