US: Kameras fotografieren Kameras-.-. --.- -.-. --.- -.-. --.- -.-. --.- -.-. --.- -.-. --.- At EPIC, we have been busy in the last few months setting up a new web site on video surveillance: http://www.observingsurveillance.org. It is mostly focused on Washington, DC where police is currently considering establishing a wide surveillance network all over the city that would be unprecedented in size and technical sophistication in the United States. The web site currently contains pictures of video cameras in Washington. It should soon include much more pictures documenting the presence of general surveillance cameras in public areas. Our intent is to internationalize the scope of the web site: we plan on creating new web pages with pictures of video cameras abroad, add comments and analyses on the situation of video surveillance in other countries, links to foreign web sites, and allow for more interactive possibilities between our readers, video surveillance commentators and us. We think that making our US visitors aware of what already exists in other countries will make them more aware of the potential scope of video surveillance, and how their civil liberties might be affected by sweeping electronic surveillance schemes. This is where we would like you to help us. We would be glad to receive images of video cameras and surveillance networks in your country or region, interesting links about video surveillance, referrals to people you know might be helpful to talk to, etc. Please send us: - your pictures of cameras (with descriptive information: location, type of camera/model, public or private operator, public or private area,...); - links to local web sites containing such pictures; - links to web sites in your country that are focused on the theme of video surveillance; - names of video surveillance experts; and - any other relevant resource you may think of, chlaurant@epic.org On the other hand, if you are a video surveillance activist or expert, we would like to hear from you if you have ideas about how to internationalize awareness of video surveillance with web sites, or have any comments on this e-mail.
