Datenschutz/direktive: EU klagt 5 EU-Staaten-.-. --.- -.-. --.- -.-. --.- -.-. --.- -.-. --.- -.-. --.- Ohren vor den Europäischen Gerichtshof gezerrt, wegen mangelhafter Implementierung der Datenschutz-Direktive. -.-. --.- -.-. --.- -.-. --.- -.-. --.- -.-. --.- -.-. --.- The European Commission said on Tuesday it would take five European Union member states to court for failing to implement rules designed to protect individuals' privacy on the Internet and other electronic networks. The EU executive said it had decided to take France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Germany and Ireland to the Luxembourg-based European Court of Justice for failing to fully implement the EU's Data Protection Directive. The law, which went into force at the end of 1998, gives individuals broad rights to know -- and in some cases control - - how information about their buying habits, credit ratings, political affiliations or other characteristics is used. The Commission said it had twice warned the five member states to fall into line. It also said individuals in countries which had not yet implemented the directive could invoke some of its provisions in their own courts if they wanted.
